Beta 11 Doesn't Remember Groups or Settings

Post by capntripz »

I have had this problem before when switching to new betas, but never after the first run.

Every time I run Beta 11, I don't have a server or any groups or any of the articles I waited painfully for. Yet when I add my server, all the groups show up in the list. The groups do not show up as subscribed, nor do the articles (of course.)

I set my NL to use an external drive and it doesn't remember that path (yet) either. It always reverts back to my C drive.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Is there a way I can recover the groups and articles I have spent the last 3 days getting loaded? I always setup my external drive on the initial running of NL, before I ever subscribe to a group or download a header.

This is getting to be a major pain in the tail. It has happened on all the betas from way back, but usually if you can get it to close one time normally (it usually crashes long before that) it will keep the settings. I could really use a lift here.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to Everyone.

If NewsLeecher can't remember any settings then it is having a problem saving to the setup.dat configuration file. Most likely it is corrupted or wrong permissions.

Please help us to research this corruption problem by sending a copy of the setup.dat to

You will need to locate and remove the setup.dat file. When you start NewsLeecher again, it will reset to default settings. You can find the location and explanation of each configuration file at viewtopic.php?t=6766

If you are using 3.95 beta 1 or later, the setup.dat files are backed up automatically so you can use a previous version. They are stored in the %APPDATA%\NewsLeecher\backups\ directory. Replace your corrupted setup.dat with one of these backups, renaming it properly of course.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, try moving all of the .dat files out of the configuration data directory and run NL again. If there error goes away then it was one of those files. You could move a few of the files back in until you find the corrupt file.

Uninstalling and reinstalling will not remove the configuration files.

Thanks, Smudge. I'll go through those tonight and see what I can find. I will also check the permission on the external drive, although I have full permissions on it in my log on name, is there a system name that has to have access privileges? That could be it.

I am running 11 now and everything since 8 on the initial install would lose all the old settings, cache, que, etc. Just like a brand new install. I always have the same profile in Vista.

I guess it would be good to just get rid of those files, but if NL resets to default settings on every start, well maybel that's a way to a clue and maybe I'm screwed. Any thoughts or explanation that might help?
