I believe the spam can be identified by a proper filtering technique built into the program. Once the headers have been assembled sort the group by size. Find blocks consisting of posts by one poster, a number of posts over some definable threshold (say 500) and file sizes within 1% (definable). All...

So that 'similar size' is not learnable by a filter? (I don't know how the email filters work). As long as there's a handy starting set of rules and the option to set custom rules per group it would be a big improvement on the current filter? The spam I come across now either is the 'same/similar s...

I would really really like a much more advanced kill filter too. A learning spam filter like you have for email/Thunderbird , configurable per group, would be ideal. Right click and select 'this is spam' or manually configure rules. I don't think that would be a good idea--there's simply not enough...

One thing that might help with the size of the filter list--add an inactivity timeout. That would clean out the old filters for the handles they no longer use. An auto filter based on the rules I gave would be very accurate, though. People don't post a large number of files that are legitimately all...

I was just coming here to say something about this bug as it was supposedly supposed to go away with the new header handling of 4.0. I believe the reason it's so elusive is I don't believe it's a true out of memory error. Rather, I think its a case of fragmentation of the heap causing a large alloca...

Better spam filtering (a suggestion for how to zap a *LOT* of it)

Again and again I see groups flooded with huge amounts of stuff that almost certainly is malware. While it's easy to spot by eyeball the sheer volume of it can hide what you're looking for. Newsleecher's filters are of very limited use against this as the poster ID changes frequently and the filenam...

As a user for more than a year I will say it *DOES* work. That's not to say there aren't bugs--there certainly are some.

Can't find the filters

I've been using Newsleecher for quite a while. Today I decided to add another string to the filter list--and I can't find it! Where did it go???

Re: 3.91b1 won't start, looking for some file on Spiril's computer!

I get an application error when starting 3.91b1 (installed over 3.9 final): Exception EAssertionFailed in module newsLeecher.exe at 000F31E9, A KernelChangeNotifier is still registered with a Control (C:\Users\spiril\D2007\Components\MustangPeak\VirtualShellTools\Source\VirtualShellNotifier.pas, li...

It's been another week, is anything going to be done? If I'm right on the cause it's an easy fix.

Re: tmp extension on downloaded files

I'm having a really annoying problem after I upgraded to 3.9 beta 13. Random files downloaded have a .tmp extension appended to the file. I have to manually rename the file and remove the .tmp extension in order access it. Is this a bug? Any easy fix? How fast is your pc ! I'm using a laptop myself...

Another victim of this bug here. I did *NOT* use any of the betas, I just installed 3.9 final when it came out--installed over 3.7 final. I have Newsleecher running in a VM, the data is being written to a drive in the host machine. I have not experimented with open files & renames in this scenario, ...
