Maintain last download pointers outside cache

If the last download pointer was stored outside the cache then it would be possible to delete all headers from an group or groups without resetting the counter to zero. By avoiding the counter reset the massive redownloads would be avoided. A separate command should be available to "Reset download c...

Possible connection

I may have discovered a connection to the problem of always getting all headers. It is my practice to delete everything from the cache when I am done going through a newsgroup. Instead of deleting everything, I've been leaving at least one msg from each of my 4 newsgroups. That seems to fix the prob...

so, apart from using SS, all i can do is permanently download a few million headers every time i want to update headers? I'm using ssl with the forum patch and still have it re-downloading all headers, except now it doesn't do it for every group. I subscribe to four groups and sometimes it gets 3 o...

Save data files before exit

Is there a way to force NL to save the data files before exit? That would solve my major headache with 8 as it seems sure that the process of crashing is leaving old dat in place.

Crash on Close

Every time I try to exit/close beta 8 it locks up or throws a crash dialogue. When I restart it starts updating headers that have already been downloaded and if there were files in the download queue that were successfully downloaded before the crash, beta 8 starts downloading them again. The first ...

Subject filter length minimum

Sorry, I'm used to Sticky posts being announcements so I posted my comment as a new topic. Redux: Just installed beta 8, went into my subject filters. Added one and on Save/Exit was presented with a barrage of error messages ~can't save must be at least four characters. This undoes a bunch of filter...

Note: city dot homicide as in city.homicide not the two words. The two words yield results for each on mine. That is I get results that contain the word "city" and results that contain the word "city" which is why I use the dot. I'm not looking for Homicide on the Streets.

Re: Same problem and it's tiresome

The one good thing is that SS is usually really obvious when it's missing files because there are huge gaps. I use usenet to follow the Australian show City Homicide. SS gives zero results from one day to 370. The free service http://www.binsearch.info gave me the entire second season when I though...

Re: Same problem and it's tiresome

I'm also thinking about canceling my subscription. When it works it's great but someone ought to at least say whether they're *trying* to fix this problem. :x Just by the way, I think it is absurd that anyone would actually *pay* for the Super Search service. I get it because I subscribe to giganew...

Re: Same problem and it's tiresome

Meanwhile, someone mentioned free indexing services that do a better job. Anybody got a link to one or two? :x The one good thing is that SS is usually really obvious when it's missing files because there are huge gaps. I use usenet to follow the Australian show City Homicide. SS gives zero results...

Similar problem

I erroneously posted in General Discussion. But I also am seeing SS stuck in "awaiting response" mode until I final Stop it.

I tried your fix of running a one day limit on a very narrow query and it still did not work for me.

Definitely not just Newsleecher

Okay, so I have a second installation of XP on the same hardware (it's 4 Gig of ram, BTW, not 4 meg  Anyway, the other installation has a lot more "stuff" installed. I ran Newsleecher on that partition and the CPU usage problem does not exist. It's really puzzling. There's a dozen programs run...

I see my c2d quad 6600 at 2-4% in the task manager, and process explorer shows 0.3-3% usage for newsleecher 3.9 minimized to tray. when up front, it jumps to 4-8* in PE and 6-13% in TM. how come you guys see so much more? That's the point of our question. Why do we see so much more. It's not just "...
