Is there a way to Super Search to exclude groups? Some of the files I download are in other languages but the files does not specify what language even tho its written in english. I get alot of hits from different groups so its hard to just search ONE group. I was hoping there is a way to exclude groups with a keyword. I tried entering -french or -.french and it doesent work =[

I wish it could exclude on groups too.
It's not pretty, but if you can identify enough characteristics not common to English, you can knock it down a lot...
For instance, I use this this to knock German posts down a lot(either in the filter or the search itself)
group:e-book and -"das " and -ö and -ä and -ü and -"Die " and -"Der " AND -"auf " and -"deutsch"

I probably do catch a few things I might not mean to, but it's an acceptable trade off for now. French might be a bit trickier then German though.

Why would anyone want to exclude a group ?

For just the reasons outlined. Some groups are language specific. If you don't understand that language at all, why would you want results from it?

I was searching for an answer to this topic using the Google and came across this post. I had to comment on it because this is quite possibly the most profoundly stupid thing I've ever read in my life. The thought that somebody read this thread and thought that this was the appropriate thing to say makes me wonder how this individual is able to dress themselves in the morning. Also, how do they not die when they confuse the box of lucky charms with rat poison?

Experience new cultures by downloading books in a language you cannot understand?
max2 wrote:I don't understand katakana but the symbols looks to be drawn with exquisite craftsmanship and that is a cultural aspect of the Japanese which I can appreciate. Wow. What a culture! I'm going to see what this "jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge" thing is all about. Bye bye!!
Idiot.

agreed crand, have results in the wrong language is pretty useless, max2 is either a troll or moronic, I think the latter as a real troll wouldn't be so dumb to put two differing arguments in the same post "to experience new cultures" seems to point that getting wrong language results is good while "not the best way but still one way" insinuates he's posted a way to block unwanted results, blech on a stick...

I added filters to block german/french/spanish results, seems to help narrow it down a bit

One reason to exclude groups is because spam and virus groups like Boneless, Bloaf and similar ones just use up the SuperSearch result limits, but bring forth no useful results, just spam and exe-in-rar and virus threats disguised as free CRACKED commercial apps. If 80% of all SuperSearch results are from spam/virus groups like Tun and .pt, the user has a greatly limited number of real, useful results from legitimate non-spam newsgroups.

Of course, some people must like *uploading*all those spam and virus posts to Boneless and the other spam/virus groups, seeing as how many of them are the most popular groups (in terms of number of posts and headers) in the entire Newsgroup universe.

... in fact, it would be better to have a feature to *Include* news groups. A user SuperSearching for Documentaries could specify the small number of legitimate Documentary newsgroups (a.b.documentaries, british, multimedia, and a few others) and that would get good results instead of a bunch of crapola from Boneless and Tun and Mom etc. Users could set up several Group Lists to choose from, even one Master List which would include all their known legitimate and favorite groups.

Anyone wanting to have SuperSearch waste resources searching Boneless and its brother and sistergroups must know something I don't know, because I can't image there being any more useless spam and virus fill Newsgroups in all of Usenet.

People wanting to avoid German, French, Spanish etc language posts already have a viable route - just specify 'not german, not French, not spanish' and similar delimiters at the initial input and most of those non-English posts will be filtered out.

Yes, but some words are not used in Anglo Saxon whereas they are in American English.
