um are you sure this is a bug... seems pretty normal to do this... since most open nfo files with a text editor..
What is brown and sticky?

.NFO files can open with whatever you set them to open with...I think most people use the DAMN NFO viewer to view .nfo files. I would consider it a bug to saving a file with a different extension...this is about the same as saving a .ZIP as a .RAR and having Winzip try to open the file.

I find it rather usefull, the default windows association with .nfo is to run some installer on it. I definitly don't want that :) Most nfo files are textfiles anyway, hardly anything special about that... just usefull information :)

Its pretty easy to change what program opens different file extentions. I don't want to use the DAMN NFO viewer for all text files...just NFO.

This bug still occurs in b29.

This is more of a feature quirck than a bug. I guess Spiril thought that since CTRL-R opened files are deleted on shutdown it didn't matter how or where they were displayed. Or perhaps since NFO is a preset windows extension he thought it safer to force NFO files into notepad than risk Windows running the default software for them.

At least add an option called "Save .nfo files with .txt extention". Turn it on by default and let advanced users uncheck the box so they can save the files as .nfo and associate the NFO viewer.

Exactly. I'm opening a lot of NFO files via the CTRL+R option and the default windows app for opening files with the NFO extension is totally useless for viewing its text contents.

Anyway it's pretty easy to associate NFO files with a text viewer from Windows Explorer, so I'll try to remove the 'Auto add .TXT to .NFO files' feature from the next release and see what people say.

Open by file extension of the default app should be better.

My default text viewer is Win32pad http://www.gena01.com/win32pad/ and nfo->txt files look much better than they would in notepad (they look crap in notepad).
But opening nfo's in damn nfo viewer would still be better.

I could always Open (read) nfo files in NL. I have associated .nfo files with DAMN nfo vierwer, and txt files with UltraEdit, both of which can show nfo files. The latest RC's of NL open neither UltraEdit nor DAMN, but the MS system info utility instead.
Damn ;-)

This is a good suggestion as it allows a user to pick what they need.

Personally I think there should be separate "Open" and "View" options with "Open" using the Windows association, in which case NFO would open the System Information program (yes, that's the default for Windows and shouldn't really be changed if you need to be to support users who send them to you for analysis) and "View" using something else configured within NL.

View should also only temporarily store the file for the duration of the view and not store it on the Download folder.

For example, in WinRAR (and I think WinZIP) you have this, and "View" opens any file within it's own ASCII viewer (useful when trying to view *.nix text files without full CR/LF which don't display well in Notepad).

Unfortunately I don't think WinRAR lets you choose the viewer so I would hope NL would have it as an option, perhaps with the default being Notepad.
