Newsleecher is recognized as a category 1 Spyware

Post by thelordfoul »

FYI my antimalware tool recognizes NL as spyware. ON launch the browser Window connects to the NL server along with the e-mail address and user name it is registered to. This allows NL to track users etc. This makes NL a category 1 spyware as my program now warns users about its behaviour.

The claim of being spyware free is bogus and I have saved a copy of the web page making this false claim.

The people who claim its free of spyware are nothing but marketing fools who do nothing to detect and report on malware.

Think about it, every time you start NL it sends your IP address back to NL's servers. Tracking your every move. This makes it a category 1 spyware and the nonsense claim that its not.

Spyware is a growing threat world wide. Spyware is used by advertisers to gather information on consumers to better spam them with more crap.

Its because of the growing threat of spyware and adware I removed ICQ and other instant messengers from my system after recieving dozens of messages a day from people selling all kinds of garbage. Stricter still my e-mail refuses messages from anyone not on my contact list.

To get certified from my operation, I require the source code to both the servers and the client to point out the areas that violate the right to privacy actually have been removed.

It's not spyware simply because it doesn't "spy" on you. It doesn't monitor or transmit your surfing habits, your activity or your room temperature.

It simply checks your license information to see if you're a legit user. The only information that is sent is which newsleecher version you are using and your license ID. It does not send your key, your e-mail address (the app doesn't even know your address, so it can't send it and when you signed up you had to enter an address, so there's no need to have it resent), or any other information.

Just out of curiosity, which spyware scanner are you using?

So does every visit to a web page or every phone call you make. Simon (NL author) has stated that this information is not logged anywhere for future use. It is merely to ensure you are using licensed software. Ahead Nero does the same thing now in v7 and there is no way to disable it aside from blocking access via a firewall.

I don't disagree with you. Spyware is a problem and I have to deal with it on a daily basis at work myself. Just last week I spent hours cleaning machines to rid them of spyware and adware.

Simon is definitely not going to hand over any source code for NL or the Super Search server. Don't even get your hopes up. If you have a problem with NL, either prevent it from connecting back to the site or if you've purchased NL you may send a copy of your order confirmation email to support@newsleecher.com and ask for a refund.

Paranoid, not quite, but considering the costs that spammers impose on industry is in the billions, I feel its important to swat spam quickly.

The tool I use to guard my machines is custom written by myself. I happen to be a competent C++ programmer so making a tool is not exactly rocket science.

Since getting rid of most of the instant messangers (they are a dime a dozen these days) and setting my hotmail to exclusive I have been able to reduce the amount of time wasted each day to minutes (time it takes to check the spam list looking for a possible legitimate message).

Worse is the game industry moving to put advertising into games. Soon you will be able to spend $50 to watch more ads.

Still think I am paranoid. Considering that at one time I used to have to sift through > 1,000 messages day, progress has been slow but steady.

Part of the problem is that most of the spam is fraudulent, counterfiet or otherwise a threat to society they gets the FBI, CIA, NSA and other agencies annoyed to the point where the guilty eventually get dragged before a judge. Hope the judge did not get to manny messages for fake viagra in his mail box the day the spammer comes before him.

I use Spybot S&D, buddy, the best anti-spyware (and related), tool on the market, and even it doesn't recognise Newsleecher as spyware.

http://www.spybot.info for more details, and to download.

You cannot expect to use the internet and not have any form of spyware. It is NOT possible. I repeat, it is not NOT NOT possible.

If you are really THAT worried, do the internet community a favour and UNPLUG.

I'm curious also, what anti-spy program do you use?

Thank you.
Hi, I don't care. Thanks.
