Header Download Speed Takes Big Hit

Post by shadowman999 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:11 pm

Windows 7 64 bit, NIS / Beta 18.2 / U-verse

Last 3 days, my header download speed has dropped from 17-18MB/s to a max of 800KB/s.....usually less. When I download files, my speed runs at or near max but header download speed is severely diminished. Log shows no unusual messages.

Just recently upgraded to recent beta version when it became available, but beyond that, no apparent changes. Checking internet speed to several sites shows expected download speed of ~17-18MB/s.

Anyone else on 18.2 noticing similar issues? Is it possible for me to regress back a version to see if that makes a difference?

Appreciate any feedback/assistance.

Don't Know Why, But this from Support made the difference

Post by shadowman999 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:24 pm

The main address for accessing the Usenet service, is news.newsleecher.com. When connecting to that address, a geo-selector server will automatically redirect you to the backend Usenet servers closest to your geographic location. Can you pls connect directly to the backend Usenet servers, use the address eu.newsleecher.com for the servers located in Europe, and us.newsleecher.com for the servers located in the U.S..

I have been using the us.news......address all along, but find that using eu.news...... is much faster and using news.news...... puts me back at max speeds :D

Perhaps this experience will help someone else too.

"Me too." Avg header download speed is 10 - 14 KB/s, for the last 2 or 3 days. Actual file downloads are as speedy as ever. I'll try a different server, as suggested by shadowman, and report back.

Switching to the EU server bumped header download speed to an average of 32 KB/s, still woefully inadequate. Just to be clear, my internet connection is fine, and binaries will download at full speed. The headers are oozing as slow as molasses.

Edit: $%*#. changing the server wiped out the pointers that tells newsleecher where to start downloading the most recent headers. Please, please fix the headers speeds, or jump on Highwinds to fix the problem.

Spoke too early. The speed soon dropped back down and stayed there, ranging 18 KB/s to 30 KB/s.

What ISP?
You checked they are not traffic shaping?

Mine is now terrible for it.
You have connections in log timing out/re-connecting at all?

Good questions. Timeouts/reconnects happen occasionally... every 4 -6 hours? Connections are quickly re-established. It's never been frequent enough for me to consider it a problem.

I'm using AT&T DSL for ISP. Fortunately, we've got a Comcast cable connection, too. I'll switch over later to see whether the problem exists using Comcast as well.

Yeah, good questions. BBL.

I am having the same issue. I used version 5.0 beta 16 until yesterday, when I installed new beta 18.2, but slow header dl speed has been going on for the last few days.
Right now it goes to ~400 kb/s but it drops down to 10-15 kb/s.
Everything else is fine, I download from newsgroups and from the web at my normal speed .... tried changing the port but that does not help ..
I am using us.newsleecher.com server and ISP is Comcast

Personally, I'd try re-installing last version while you are having the problem, to see if definitely fixes the problem.

Logs not say much then?

Hi

Im also experiencing slow header download ~ 36Kbs over the last few days, downloading has been fine tho so I don't see how my ISP could be traffic shaping altho I have tried different ports to no avail & i'm based in europe so assume i'm connected to the european server.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I tried connecting to eu server, us server and main one (news.newsleecher.com) and it's slow on all of them. Furthermore, I uninstalled 18.2, cleaned registry and any folder/files residue and installed 16 back on, same problem persists ...

I'm fortunate to have two ISPs. I switched over to the other ISP, and the result was identical: creeping headers. So it's unlikely due to traffic shaping. That was yesterday.

Today, for the moment, header speed is mostly staying in the 400 to 460 KB/s range, with some dips to the 200's and 300's. Faster would be nicer, but I can live with those speeds, if they hold.

Cheers, all.

Speeds for me are in the 300-400Kbs range today also, this has to be an issue with the News Servers if we are all getting similar results

I'm on GN until later in month, then on NL.
I'll check GN headers tomorrow, as I am shaped by ISP and could not get anything at moment.
