Group not updating like it used to do

Post by CryptAngel » Fri Jan 27, 2017 8:29 pm

Dear Newsleechers,

I subscribe to a group, that used to function. In the past 1-2 weeks, somethings has changed. Updating now takes several minutes, and sometimes it just freezes the entire program. It says "Loading usenet group" and the green bar moves slowly.. very, very slowly.. often not at all.

I was no 7.15 I think. I tried 7, final cut, then 8.1 or 8.3 (not entirely sure) to no avail. Any suggestion?

Who broke the internet, dammit!

This program is damn near unusable now. I used to update a.b.teevee every day and now I have to search for the article title using supersearch or I wouldn't even be able to use this piece of garbage. Updating any group will immediately hang the program when it gets to about 200k articles. Right-click a.b.teevee and catch up headers results in newsleecher.exe soaring to over 4 GIGABYTES of ram usage. What the hell is going on? Can you guys hire some programmers to fix your garbage because this program, as it has been for the past 5 years, is an example of what happens to products when there is no competition. If there was anything even remotely close to newsleecher, I'd be gone in a second. I feel cheated, ripped off, fleeced, and taken advantage of. Still can't truncate paths so downloading articles with long titles results in wasted bandwidth. So many problems, so many years, so many complaints, NOTHING EVER DONE TO FIX IT.

I wish I could post the words I want to say but you'd just delete it. I hate this program and the people (let's be honest, the PERSON) who make it with a fierce passion. If I met you in person I'd slap you in the face with a white leather glove.

AB Teevee has been bombarded by some spammer [from Holland it was suggested], and originally it was usable programs although I just added the spammer to my kill list, problem sorted however things have now escalated.
Now he [or it] is flooding the group with incomplete files and with various poster "names" so blocking is impossible.
I don't know if there is a way to get NewsLeecher to ignore this crap, however this is some dedicated attack and occasionally makes NewsLeecher unusable.
For Teevee use this page, just paste the numbers in to Supersearch, job done, if ETC is being overwhelmed too I have no idea.

Thanks guys, especially bkz2457, that list is great! Didn't understand the email, but the allfilledbot helps a lot. Seems like the forum at newsbin pro has something in the works, but I dont like newsbin, so I dont know if I'll try is.

You're welcome, it was posted in Teevee but hard to find due to spam.
Its coming through Bulknews, and despite quite a few of us e-mailing it still continues.
One suggested its the DMCA trying to fight TV piracy, unlikely, but if it was it would be a real change of approach. ;)

Filter subject line need 16 entries
::/0 to ::/9
then
::/a to ::/f

Add those and 99.999% problem goes away

for now..

1. Right-click on the subscribed group that can't load due to spam.
2. Select 'Cleaning -> Wipe Group Cache'

To prevent spam from this same user in future:

1. Open NewsLeecher Settings
2. Go to the group subscriptions settings page.
3. Add this 'Poster' filter : newz[nzb] <pr3d@net.world>
4. Add this 'Subject' filter : [Private]

We are working on version 8 that will take care of stupid spam.

I assume we're talking about the poster that floods the log with lines that read, "Skipping article as is contains too many article parts."? Newsleecher hangs soon afterwards? I was searching for a way to force NL to use more of my PC's memory, but it seems I was looking for the wrong solution.

This problem spans groups focused on tv, film, and music. Industry agents usually focus on only one subject, not all three at once, leaving me to wonder who is behind the malicious posts. Also wondering, why hasn't the poster's server (or his entire NSP) been isolated from the rest of usenet by the other NSPs?

What I would really like is a poster whitelist, if you can blacklist a poster why not white list? I have groups where I'm only interested in posts from a couple of quality posters and would love the ability to accepts header/posts ONLY from them. That would've helped solve this problem as well.
