NewsLeecher V4.0 Pre Beta 8 ( Forum Release Only )

Post by Spiril » Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:18 pm

THREAD HAS BEEN CLOSED AS THE OFFICIAL NEWSLEECHER V4.0 BETA 8 VERSION HAS BEEN RELEASED

Here's an unofficial pre-release of NewsLeecher V4 Beta 8 for those interested in checking it out:

http://www.newsleecher.com/nl4b8.fr1.exe

EDIT: Unofficial Forum Release #2 available here:
viewtopic.php?p=93064#93064

Note that due to the many changes in this release, it might contain some larger bugs. We will work on getting those bugs fixed as they get reported.

Please reply in this thread if your post is related to the NewsLeecher V4 Beta 8 Pre-Release(s).

Changelist since beta 7:<pre>+: Native Header Compression:
Native article header compression now supported through the
usenet server 'XFEATURE' command.
The feature can be turned off from: "Settings ->
Adv. Nerdy Tweaks -> Article Download Allow XFEAT Compression".
Not all usenet servers support this command. NewsLeecher will
automatically check for support when it connects to the server,
and use the feature if supported. When the feature is enabled,
the 'header download' speed should be 2-10X times faster than
usual.
+: Implemented physical disk cleanup for usenet group caches.
It's possible to specify how much garbage a group cache must
have before the cleanup routine is triggered. The setting
can be accessed at:
Settings -> Adv. Nerdy Tweaks -> Article Cache Max Garbage Pct
+: (Re)implemented the 'Add to Subject Ignore List' feature for
the group headers view. It can be accessed from the popup menu.
+: (Re)implemented the 'Add to Poster Ignore List' feature for
the group headers view. It can be accessed from the popup menu.
+: (Re)implemented the 'Select Smart' feature for the group
browsing view, the SuperSearch Service view and the transfer
queue. The comparison algorithm used by 'Select Smart' has also
been improved a bit.
+: (Re)implemented the 'Select Poster' feature for the group
browsing view, the SuperSearch Service view and the transfer
queue.
*: The overall performance of NewsLeecher has been improved due to
lots of internal optimizations.
*: Group article headers are now received in a separate CPU
thread. Using this multithreaded approach to fecth headers,
will make NewsLeecher run smoother on slower computer, while
fetching headers.
*: The progress bar view in the "Bots" listview, now also shows
the download progress of the entire collections belonging to
the downloading articles.
*: The "Number of New Group Headers at Server"-counters are now
updated live, while fetching headers from groups.
*: Several optimizations to the internal structures in
NewsLeecher, making the app run a bit smoother on slow systems.
*: Moved Socks Firewall setup to the Advanced Nerdy Tweaks
settings page.
*: Improved the appearance of the Nerdy Tweaks dialog a bit.
*: Smaller visual improvements here and there.
!: The explorer listviews sort column and sort order is now
remembered between sessions.
!: Fixed bug where the queue status text for downloading articles
was sometimes incorrectly set to 'initializing'.
!: In the previous betas, the columns in the "all groups" listview
were not sortable. Fixed.
!: NewsLeeecher would sometimes freeze for some seconds during
starup. This has (most probably;) been fixed. Not 100% sure
though.
!: Sorting by the 'Download Folder' column in the queue listview
didn't work properly. Fixed.
!: Smaller bugs fixed. (the adv. nerdy tweak
'gui_show_popup_hints' didn't work in the previous beta, etc..)</pre>

Enjoy! ;)

Here a good idea. If compression on headers work for your provider.
And it's not posted already. Say who works, if it doesn't say so too.

Seems to be running smooth here. I just hope that our complaining (mine included) didn't force you to rush just to please us. While appreciated, its better for us to wait, rather than for you to rush. :)

yohimba: No, this version is mostly for some people to test if it fixed the hanging at start problem and to test more providers with the header compression system. It wasn't rushed but just that the alpha team can only test it so far.

The alpha team was able to get the compressed header system working properly with Giganews, NewsHosting, and Astraweb. If you are unable to get it working with another provider, please post the details so Spiril can look into it.

If anyone that is having the hanging at startup problem, please try this version and let us know if it has been resolved.
Please be aware of and use the following pages...
Services Status Page : SuperSearch and Usenet Access server status, retention, server load, indexing time, etc.
Support Request Form : Use this if you have a problem with billing or account status. The forum is only for NewsLeecher application issues.

Hi,

Sorry to post a 'bug' already: Shift-Pgup & Pgdn scroll sideways in the article list instead of extending the selection.

Some requests:
1) A request (simple to implement i think) that i have made before is to show in the repair view if there are enough par2 block to repair. What i mean is you count the number of damaged blocks and see if that does not rise above the number of already downloaded repair blocks + the number of repair blocks still in the queue. That way you can see if it's worth downloading any further.
2) I would like to see that you correct extracted paths of archives that only contain a subdirectory in the root. Now you often see inside the extraction directory a second directory with the same name leading frequently to to long paths.

Both my news providers do not support header compression so no luck there...

BUG 1: The "delete cached headers" functionality (used to be called purge) isn't working correctly. It still doesn't work at all from the right-click option in the article tab. It does still work from the manager tab, but it deletes the headers from all groups, not just the one you selected. Further, when you try to re-retrieve the headers from a group that was intentionally or otherwise purged, all headers are pulled from the server, but there are very large gaps in what you will ultimately have available in NL- for example, you will see the past 29 days, then days 60-100, then days 320+ (no, I have no filters enabled). Or have my settings files just become corrupt?

BUG 2: This is also a bug in beta 7- there used to be a setting to hide the connections panel whenever the explorer tab is active. This is no longer there- or am I just missing something?

Export to NZB?

Post by Sparky24 » Thu Nov 05, 2009 3:06 am

Appreciate the pre-beta and hoping the list that is detailed above is not all inclusive of the updates. The ability to export to NZB is a previous function that is greatly missed by me. Will this be included in the formal Beta 8? If not, where does it fit in the list of priorities please. :?:

I got this on opening it up - I did check Your Personal Settings in the members area just in-case, and it shows
License Status: Active
SuperSearch Status: You Have Full Access

I'm delighted to say that the 30-second start up is no more, it's only a couple of seconds for me now. The only thing that slows my startup now is the following error box:

Supersearch doesn't work with this release for me. Went back to 3.9final and it's working again. Odd.

This works for me on the Articles and Queue tabs, but SuperSearch gives me a not-implemented message. You can work around this if you queue the desired articles, write an NZB from the queue and then delete them from the queue. It's clunky, but it does work.

Still haven't re-added the export to nzb feature in supersearch? This should have been a top priority imo.
