UNC paths (3.9b1)

Post by Taomyn » Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:38 pm

Seems that when you choose a UNC path for Leech (Specify) e.g. "\\server\sharename\folder" in folder "subfolder", the download ends up in c:\server\sharename\folder\subfolder

Took me a little while to figure out what had happened to my download.

if your wanting to download to a different machine on your network you gotta map a shared drive on the machine your using to download with.

I also had a problem with RnE downloading to the wrong path. In my case, I was on Vista and my username had an ñ (n with the little ~ thing over it) and it downloaded fine, but when RnE went to extract the files, it created a folder in the correct folder (my documents) but extracted to a different name. Something about the ñ messed up the extraction. Not sure if its been reported yet.

No you don't "gotta"! UNC path names have been an integral part of Windows since NT 3.5 (probably before) and are a standard way to access files. No program now should insist on mapped drives, at least none written this century. They died along with insisting on 8.3 file names.

Well for now you "gotta" use mapped drives because Newsleecher doesn't have proper support for UNC paths. When Spiril codes Newsleecher to support UNC paths and stop stripping the leading \, then you will be able to use them like normal.

It has never been said that Newsleecher has UNC support so you are not buying something that isn't working properly. Right now it is still a request to have UNC support added.

Sorry, but that's like saying that only 8.3 filenames are supported - UNC is a normal and standard part of Windows and I can't think of anything else that they don't work with.

If what is being said above is correct and NL is simply stripping characters out from the path, then NL is at fault and should simply pass whatever is entered to the OS for look-up.

Why all the complaining ?

You registered on the forum on " 25 May 2004" has it really took you nearly 3 years to work out you can't save to a network drive?

Just course you now want this feature its not really the way to encourage the author is it?

Because it's being treated as a feature request rather than a bug/programming error.

I fail to see what this has to do with anything, except perhaps to show that I have some loyalty to the product and want to see it get better. Not just by adding more and more features (though I do love the new PAR/Extract function - awesome), but by fixing the little things that have hung around for ages and having a solid product.

I only bring this up now, because now I have recently gotten a Terastation so now the problem is now a problem for me. Before this I never used network drives at home for Newsleecher
